IBIS in LOVE
Our fall fundraiser featured IBIS couples and friends making music together. We were so fortunate this year to have as our venue the spectacular McLean home of our friends Jan and Elizabeth Lodal--who have a whole room dedicated to art and music making. We made some new friends, enjoyed good food and drink, and raised over $5000 towards our upcoming season. A heartfelt thanks to the Lodals! Our event also featured a commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, as violinist Joel Fuller and pianist Edward Newman performed a touching rendition of the last movement of Messiaen's powerful Quartet for the End of Time.

And in other news, we bid a very fond (and sad) farewell to our beautiful cellist Amy Butler, who has moved north to New Jersey. She will be hard to replace! We wish her all the best.

ANOTHER SOLD OUT SHOW WITH DAR
Our evening concert with Dar Williams sold out and a second performance was added. The audience loved the mix of strings and harp with Dar's thought-provoking beautiful songs and the standing room only crowd at the evening show rewarded us with an instant standing o! See some photos on our Facebook page.

SOLD OUT CONCERT WITH DAR WILLIAMS
Wow! Our collaboration with singer/songwriter Dar Williams at the Heritage Museum in Lexington MA generated a lot of press in the Boston Globe and elsewhere around town. Here's a great piece by James Reed that ran just before the concert. We also got a nice interview with the Lexington Minuteman and a half hour spot on Jay Moberg's show on WUMB. Plus we were the Globe West's Best Bet of the Week and featured in the Globe's Arts Section as "What to Do." Pretty exciting! But the packed house and thrilled audience was even more exciting. Here's what some attendees had to say:
"That was one of the best concerts I've ever seen in my life. And as a former radio station music director, I've seen a LOT of shows!"
"I was blown away by the your eclectic program, by your musicianship and by the arrangements which gave a sense of s--t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g right ...out of the box. Hats off to you, Joe, for your wonderfully expansive and adventurous arrangements of Dars compositions. They helped to showcase Dar at her best."
"The concert was incredible. Thank you to all of you for unlocking another layer of beauty in Dar's music."

WE WELCOME TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO THE IBIS FAMILY!
IBIS is pleased to announce that pianist Edward Newman, already a veteran of several IBIS concerts, has officially joined our artist roster. We are looking forward to more of Ed's great playing in a concert of music for piano trio in the spring of 2011.
Read more about Ed here.
And on the home front, we congratulate IBIS violinist Joel Fuller and his wife Susan Fuller (who has performed double duty on both violin and viola for IBIS) on the birth of their son Jonah, born on June 5, 2010. He has a beautiful head of hair and a perfect bow hold! We can't wait to meet him!

IBIS Road Trip
IBIS had A LOT of fun this summer, playing a benefit concert for Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Cape Cod. Joel Fuller, his wife Susan, and Amy Butler all traveled out to Cape Cod, kids and dog in tow, to take part in this event. (And to go to the beach, eat great seafood and drink margaritas!)
We raised between $8000-9000 for this great cause, and performed works by William Grant Still, Debussy, Piazzolla, and Gershwin (arranged by our own Joe Scheer) for a large and very enthusiastic crowd. But for us the most fun was performing with my (Susan's) incredibly talented sister-in-law Dar Williams, with Joe's original arrangements of 6 of her songs. Stereo-Type says: "Dar Williams may be the best female singer/songwriter in America today" and we agree! (I think she's better than the boys too!) Playing with Dar was definitely one of the coolest things we've done, and we hope to repeat that show in DC. Here are some photos of one of our rehearsals.

IBIS Violinist Joins NSO
Congratulations to IBIS violinist Joel Fuller, who recently won an audition to become the newest member of the National Symphony Orchestra violin section. An audition like this draws many many musicians from around the country and even the world. We are proud of Joel's accomplishment, and also very grateful that he will still be in the DC area and continuing to perform with IBIS.

IBIS HOLDS ITS FIRST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING BRUNCH
IBIS wants to thank all the supporters who came out for a great afternoon of music, food and champagne. They helped IBIS kick off its season and raise some money. About 45 fans old and new (including a number of attentive kids) enjoyed music for two violins and string bass. Joe did some new arrangements of jazz standards and he threw in a few musical jokes, and a few season previews. The audience was quite appreciative and a great time was had by all.
We thank Joel Fuller and the National Symphony's Rick Barber for their generosity and great music-making, as well as IBIS kid Lillie Scheer for sharing her vocal talents.
And we are indebted to our hosts, Peter de Boor and Geneva Moore, who made the event a great success.
Our Fall Fundraising Brunch will be an annual event--you won't want to miss the next one!
