What's New This Season?
It's The Year of the Woman for IBIS Chamber Music!
IBIS is busy planning the 2011-2012 season! The highlight will be our celebration of women composers in 2 concerts, each in the lovely sanctuary of Arlington's Rock Spring Congregational Church. The first, on Sunday, February 26, 2012, will feature works of more contemporary composers Germaine Tailleferre, Cecile Chaminade, Amy Beach, Jennifer Higdon and Rebecca Clarke.
The second program, on March 11 at 4 pm, features household names from the classical music world: Mendelssoh, Schumann and Holst. But our program, entitled Wives, Sisters, and Daughters and will feature works for piano, strings and soprano by Fanny Mendelssohn (sister of Felix), Clara Schumann (wife of Robert), and Imogen Holst (daughter of Gustav) as well as works by Amy Beach and 17th century composer Barbara Strozzi.
In addition, look for works by women on all of our concerts this season.
But first! Consider helping IBIS get a jump on its season by attending our annual houseparty fundraising event. IBIS in Love will feature IBIS musicians performing romantic works with their spouses (and friends). Join us in the magnificent art-filled home of our friends Jan and Elizabeth Lodal. Our September 11 event is scheduled to start at 4, music at 4:30, followed by hors d'oeuvres and a special IBIS cocktail. A donation of $75 per person is requested--please consider making a donation even if you cannot attend.
On October 7, 7 pm, we are thrilled to be appearing in concert with renowned soprano Alessandra Marc, in the Flight 93 Memorial Concert at the Masonic Temple in Alexandria VA. Musical selections by Barber, Tchaikovsky, Copland, Rodgers and others, celebrate the American spirit.
November brings our second season of Champagne & Strings in the intimate Lyon Park Community Center. For a modest admission, enjoy music for string trio and flute by Beethoven, Martinu, Mozart and others, followed by a champagne reception. The second concert in the series features only the 4 strings on Joseph Scheer's violin--and he will make them sing in a program of solo partitas and sonatas by Bach.
Looking for a way to get the kids out of the house in January? IBIS reprises its rollicking arrangement of Mischief Managed--John Williams' music from the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The concert (location TBA) will also feature our original arrangement of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, and will be enhanced by projected images. Yes, it's a concert for children, but music lovers of all ages will enjoy this multi-media presentation.
And to top off the season--a fun change of pace as IBIS brings its All American program to IOTA Club and Cafe in Arlington's Clarendon neighborhood. Enjoy a program of Gershwin, Barber, and more, while you partake of this local music mecca's full menu and bar. And look for some free "open rehearsal" dates at IOTA during the season--we will keep you posted.
